Good story. A sad commentary, although I didn't see it as one reviewer did, as a warning against us sinful humans eating meat. Really? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I avoid the religious, and the vegan nutjobs. I'd recommend this story, it had a great message and was sadly comical.Product details

I can see the blatant anthro-bot objectification as an analogy of our society's addiction to the use and abuse of animals. The torture that goes on daily with these creatures is a sacrifice for the human race's sin of eating flesh. The livestock must die so that old values can be upheld. The trinity of church, corporation and state must meld in order for Jesus and the fatted calf to become one.
In the tradition of Herbert and Atwood, Shad Clark ushers in a new perspective on the not-so-distant future one that includes a Christian Utopia, a cast of blasphemous idolaters, and a Christ that happens to be a slave for the fundamentalist right. Is it any wonder that these religious hypocrites are swindling park-goers out of their money? Or that the father is the kind of fellow who must prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has dominion over all living things?
These bible-camp-teachers gone amusement-park-owners show all the worst traits of a southern Christian upbringing. And the author's voice comes through loud and clear, if he's trying to say he doesn't like these people and their ways. The greed and bigotry that they show is definitely not one I would hope to see in a Christian family. But that's the part that spurns me on to read and find out if the devil is really behind their transgressions. And to pray for their ascension.
A trenchant satire and an incisive commentary on the disconcerting intersection of materialism, fundamentalism and fetishism, 'Upgrading God' will leave you laughing until you have to cry, or crying until you have to laugh. I particularly appreciated the writer's take on the commodification and commercialization of religion, the merging of the spiritual, the political and the material. Reading it, I can't help but see this as a veiled allegory of a certain fruit-themed computer company and their Christ-like leader, though I wouldn't go so far as to say that this was the writer's intention. Whatever your take, you're bound for a singularly provocative experience.
