108 Body Techniques by Melina Flores is a meticulously organized study-guide for students and teachers alike to learn the primary 108 ásana families of the Pre-Classical Yôga, codified by Professor DeRose as SwáSthya Yôga.

The book 108 Body Techniques presents over 400 full color pictures to demonstrate the most important families of ásana. There are 108 primary families and an infinity of variations branching out from them. Melina organized the ásanas, classifying them according to the application and influence of the position.

Melina also brings a highly pedagogic approach to learning and studying the Sanskrit names of the techniques. Once familiar with this classification system outlined in her book, the creative student will be able to explore the discipline of ásana like never before and name them appropriately.

But, what is ásana after all? Ásana is a body technique that, for many people, best stereotypes Yôga. This is due to the fact that, among all of the Yôga techniques, it is the only one that can be photographed, filmed and demonstrated in public.

In general people tend to view ásana exclusively through its corporal prism.

Ásana is a body technique, yes, but not exclusively corporal. Nothing like gymnastics, or physical education. The origins are different, the proposals are different and the methodologies are different. Which is why in Yôga we don’t need many things that are considered fundamental in physical education like, for example, the musculature warm-up. Ancient Yôga does not warm up the muscles before practicing ásana.

For anyone new to these ancient body techniques, a broad and laconic definition of ásana, according to Pátañjali's work Yôga Sútra (chapter II, page 46), states that ásana is any firm and comfortable positions (sthira sukham ásanam). Following this definition, the number of ásanas is infinite. Another phrase attributed to Shiva agrees, claiming that there are as many ásanas as living beings on Earth.

Others, though, limit the number of ásanas to 84,000, of which 840 are the most important and, of these, only 84 are fundamental. In this book, we account for 108 ásanas with their respective pictures. Melina's work was inspired by and based on Professor DeRose's classic work titled Treatise of Yôga, which contains the largest ásana compilation to date in the history of Yôga anywhere in the world.

Nevertheless, the technique does not deserve the name ásana unless it incorporates other techniques and qualities.

1. Organic body procedure (position);
2. Coordinated breathing;
3. Internal attitude;

The organic body procedure needs to be
a) stable;
b) comfortable;
c) esthetic.

The coordinated breathing needs to be
a) conscious;
b) deep (abdominal and complete);
c) paused (rhythmic).

The internal attitude needs to be
a) localization of consciousness on the body;
b) mentalization of images, colors and sounds;
c) bháva (deep feeling, or reverence).

Melina Flores is a long-time SwáSthya Yôga practitioner, teacher and entrepreneur. Her company Espaço Cultural Copacabana is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she lives.

From its origin beginning over 5000 years ago, the philosophy of Yôga was always taught through the tradition parampará (oral transmission of knowledge). While it is essential that the student and Instructor be self-dependent in their practice and study, the philosophy of Yôga is learnt personally with an authorized Instructor, Professor or Master. It is recommend that the body techniques illustrated in this book be learned personally with a qualified Instructor. Fortunately, the Internet has made that possible for even the most remote students.
