On Mountaineering is written with the clear voice of someone who has met the challenges of serious mountaineering and
understands that we only become one with nature when respecting its power and submitting to it's wisdom.
Resonating for me, a casual hiker, were the poetic descriptions of ice caves, whiteouts, glaciers, valleys, waterfalls and the sense of warmth and rest after a day's climb. Those who have met the challenges of mountaineering will appreciate Mr. West's narrative.
The rest of us can enjoy the experience through the eyes of someone who has a passion for and understanding of this eternal challenge, both on the mountains and in our spirit.
